Job Summary
Ensures that business practices, policies, and dealings of the Company meet all applicable legal and regulatory requirements. Represents the Company in regulatory proceedings, interprets and prepares legal documents, and provides counsel on legal and regulatory matters. Provides analysis of proposed legislation and its potential impact on the Company, drafts proposed legislation, and assists Director with managing internal and external regulatory legal counsel. Assists with developing and maintaining a positive company relationship with regulatory commissions and other stakeholders.
Essential Functions
- Provides legal advice and recommendations for action regarding matters of some complexity, which have or may have or may have a material dollar impact on business activities and operations.
- Represents the Company in regulatory proceedings before state and federal regulatory agencies.
- Supports governmental affairs activities by reviewing and/or drafting proposed legislation.
- Supports regulatory affairs activities in maintaining company relationships with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders.
- Prepares and/or reviews correspondence, legal memoranda, contracts, and company communications.
- Provides day-to-day counsel and advice to executives and management of the Company.
- Acts as supervising authority over outside counsel on projects or specific areas of practice.
Education Description
- Requires a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
Licensure
- Requires admission to the practice of law in either Ohio or Indiana.
- Candidates admitted to the practice of law in other states will be considered if the candidate is eligible to apply for and received admission in Ohio or Indiana.
Experience
- 5-8 years of experience practicing law as in-house counsel, at a law firm or private practice, or in a government entity.
- Experience in practicing before the Public Utility Commission of Ohio (PUCO), the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC), or the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is preferred.
- Will consider candidates with less experience for a different regulatory-legal role in the department.
Physical Requirements
- Able to hear oral communication either in person or on equipment such as telephone or mobile phone.
- Able to operate a personal computer, either desktop or laptop, for extended periods.
- Able to reach, grasp and move items.
- Able to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time.
- Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Able to communicate orally in a clear manner.
- Able to operate office equipment, including telephone, photocopier, fax machine, calculator, laptop, mobile phone, etc.
- Able to sit and to view a personal computer monitor or laptop screen for extended periods of time.
- Able to travel long distances domestically in a motor vehicle or airplane.
- Able to operate a motor vehicle, including ability to enter and exit the vehicle unassisted.
Working Conditions
- Able to support the Emergency Operating Plan.
- Able to work indoors, in an office environment, regardless of whether open office, cubicle, or private office.
- Able to travel occasionally, possibly overnight.
- Able to travel to attend or conduct training and/or attend professional association conferences and/or other meetings (with customers, vendors, contractors) and stay overnight as required.
- Able to work overtime (scheduled and/or unscheduled, nights and/or weekends), as needed or required to meet established deadlines.
