Job Summary

The Public Safety Specialist III is responsible for the delivery of electric safety messages and demonstrations to those who work around electric utility systems and facilities.  This position will also have responsibilities for incident response, outreach events for the public, and maintenance of the CEHE Public Safety program elements.

Essential Functions

    • Serve as a point-of-contact for external inquiries about electric utility public safety.
    • Deliver electric safety presentations and demonstrations to at-risk work groups, such as contractors, crane operators, first responders, and public works.
    • Participate in and deliver electric safety messages at public outreach events.
    • Drive the company vehicle and demonstration trailer to work sites or agreed up locations.
    • Operate the electric safety demonstration trailer and use live-line tools and appropriate PPE to conduct arcing demonstrations.
    • Develop and update electric safety presentations.
    • Provides field consultations to workers and the public.
    • Conduct periodic reviews of CEHE facilities/equipment.
    • Participates in on-site review of incidents involving the public, reviews circumstances and reports findings.
    • Provide information and training on the CEHE Public Safety Program to internal work groups.
    • CEHE Public Safety Program administration.

Education Description

Requires a bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Psychology, Engineering, Business, or related technical field. In lieu of a degree, two (2) years of related experience may be substituted for one (1) year of education. This is in addition to the minimum experience requirements listed below.

Experience

    • Requires at least five (5) years of relevant work experience which may include safety, human and organizational performance, incident investigation/management or continuous improvement.
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification preferred.

Physical Requirements

    • Able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, reach, climb stairs and ladders, and poles.
    • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
    • Able to demonstrate and apply manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and common office equipment.
    • Able to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.
    • Able to operate a motor vehicle and drive a motor vehicle daily or for extended time periods, in a safe manner, and enter/exit vehicle unassisted.

Working Conditions

    • Required to participate in CenterPoint Energy’s All Hazard Emergency Operation Plan (AHOP).
    • Able to work indoors in an office environment and outdoors with occasional exposure to all weather conditions, equipment, and noise when at field installation sites.
    • This position will require approximately 10-15% travel across the six-state footprint.
