Summary:

 

Provides engineering technical support associated with the development, analysis, and construction of high voltage equipment to be utilized in CenterPoint Energy’s (CNP) substation systems. This role plays a critical part in ensuring material reliability and performance across transformers, reactors, bushings, and other substation equipment. Evaluate and apply industry standards.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:   

 

  • Evaluate equipment and materials for use on CNP’s electric system.
  • Create/modify standards and materials databases.
  • Investigate reliability and operational problems as related to material failure or misapplication of standards.
  • Provide technical guidance as needed.
  • Investigate claims, participate in lawsuit resolution, and provide engineering analysis as needed.
  • Write new or revise engineering/technical specifications.
  • Interface with engineers, construction personnel, warehousing personnel, purchasing agents, vendors and management regarding material issues.
  • Evaluate and review manufacturer drawings and equipment for compliance with CNP requirements.
  • Develop and maintain standards and material specifications. This will include construction distribution hardware mock-up assemblies for field evaluation and researching new products.
  • Recommend and/or coordinate research and development (R&D) projects including preparing requests for proposal (RFP) and budget proposals, evaluating contractor bids, and review contract terms and conditions.
  • Develop instructions, standard drawings, and material lists to be used by Operations personnel and outside entities.
  • Travel to manufacturer plants, industry conferences.
  • Coordinate material testing and failure analysis.
  • Interpret and apply applicable codes and standards such as National Electrical Safety and National Electrical Code.
  • Gather and analyze data, perform engineering studies, prepare written reports, give oral presentations related to electric systems.

 

 

Education:   

 

Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university. A Professional Engineer license in the State of Texas is required or another state and active pursuit of a license in Texas can be substituted for the degree.

 

Experience:   

 

Engineer - Requires a minimum of four (4) Engineering experience. Preferably two (2) years of electric utility or power engineering experience.
