Job Summary

The Director of Special Events & Public Coordination is responsible for planning, organizing, and executing special events and public engagement activities within the utility industry. This role involves strategic planning, coordination with various stakeholders, and ensuring that events align with the company's goals and public relations strategies. The Director will lead a team, manage event logistics, and foster positive relationships with the community and other external partners. 
 

Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement strategies to reduce CenterPoint Energy’s Electric System impacts during major events. 
  • Coordinate with internal departments, external partners, and vendors to develop specific plans for the electric distribution system.
  • Lead the team that will inspect, create work orders, and preform construction on the electric distribution infrastructure prior to special events. 
  • Ensure the electric system is prepared for the special events. 
  • Ensure planning for various events align with the company's electric operations and the emergency preparedness and response team. 
  • Serve as point of contact for emergencies on the electric system during major events with stakeholders for all event-related inquiries and communications.
  • Develop, track, and report progress on specific activity related to the operation of company electric assets to leadership in preparation and execution of major events in the CenterPoint Energy Electric Footprint.
  • Work closely with the electric operations team and emergency preparedness and response team to implement strategic plans for special events and public engagement activities.
  • Understand service standards and use operations experience to oversee the planning, organization, and execution of events, including logistics, budgeting, and staffing.
  • Represent the company at industry forums, conferences, and community events.
  • Develop and manage the budget for special events and public coordination activities.
  • Oversee the procurement and management of event-related materials and services.
  • Lead and manage the special events team, providing direction, support, and mentorship.
  • Develop and implement training programs for event staff to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Conduct regular evaluations and provide feedback to team members.
  • Foster relationships with community organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders to develop specific plans to ensure successful event execution. 

Education Description

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology, Project Management, Communications, or other related fields from an accredited university is required.
    A Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) is optional but preferred.
  • Professional certifications in project management or continuous improvement are preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in project management, continuous improvement, and data analysis, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets and contracts.
  • Ability to think strategically and implement innovative solutions.
