Job Summary

Provide leadership and technical expertise for trainers and coordinators in development and implementation of training programs and learning practices, which address the priority needs to improve and/or enhance individual performance with a focus on employee competency and risk reduction. Collaborates with operations, compliance, and other support groups, manages technical training program for applicable functional area of CenterPoint Energy. 

Essential Functions

  • Directs training supervision so that all plans, schedules, and all training functions by the training staff are coordinated and available to the internal customer base.
  • Provides professional leadership and guidance to customers to ensure effective technical training curricula are developed, delivered, and implemented.
  • Final reviewer and approver of curricula for instruction.
  • Adapts, as needed the assessment and training curriculum based upon market conditions and labor availability.
  • Collaborates with others to ensure curriculum incorporates changing technology and reflects accurate objectives. 
  • Develops and maintains an effective monitoring process to evaluate organization’s technical quality and takes necessary action to adjust curriculum based upon demonstrated results.
  • Works with Safety to ensure applicable safety regulatory policies and procedures are included in the training curricula.
  • Manages cost of the training by leveraging efficient delivery methods and outsourcing appropriate performance interventions.
  • Develop and oversees training budgets.

 

Essential Functions Continued

  • Consults with operations management and other customers to determine appropriate performance improvement interventions.
  • Works with Compliance and Operations to ensure that assignments, refresher/recurring training, and related employee qualifications meet or exceed necessary requirements and updates curricula as necessary to ensure these requirements are met.
  • Ensures that all training equipment and facilities are maintained properly and works with training staff for innovative training tools.
  • Continuing professional development by continuing education and keeping current with trade and industry information.
  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to manage and direct Training Department personnel.
  • Direct and develop Training Department personnel’s professional development both from technical expertise and succession planning.

Education Description

  • Bachelor's degree in related field (i.e., Business Administration, Management, Industrial Safety, Industrial Relations, Human Resource Development or Behavioral Science) from an accredited college or university. In lieu of a degree, required eight (8) years of work experience. Every two years of experience is equivalent to one year of education.

Experience

  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience in the areas of field operations, technical training or human resource development and prefers a minimum five (5) years of management experience in a leadership capacity.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience managing a multi-location organization. Experience managing a sizeable staff of professionals in different geographical locations a plus.
  • Related professional certifications.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to view a computer screen for extended periods of time.
  • Able to work with a laptop or other electronic devices.
  • Able to lift to 20 pounds repetitively and 50 pounds on a few occasions.
  • Able to demonstrate and apply the manual dexterity to assist in developing training equipment and training devices.
  • Able to sit for extended times.
  • Able to stand for extended training times.
  • Able to stoop, bend, kneel and climb/descend stairs.
  • Able to operate copy machine, fax machine, calculator, telephone and other office equipment.

Working Conditions

  • Able to work a varied schedule with projects and deadlines requiring the ability to meet changing demands.
  • Able to perform work indoors in an office environment.
  • Able to work with occasional exposure to all weather conditions: hot, dirty and/or greasy equipment and noise when at field sites or other settings.
  • Able to work as required, often over 40 hours a week.
  • Able to travel out of town, including overnight stays, up to 25% of the time.
