ENGINEER DISTRIBUTION PROTECTION
Job description
Summary:
Specify, design, and modify power system protection schemes and SCADA schemes. Develop protective relaying settings, and assist in the commissioning of distribution devices to maintain and to improve the reliability of the CNP electric distribution system. Support projects on the distribution system.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop protection schemes schemes and specify relays for use in independent relaying systems, interacting with other engineering sections, equipment vendors, engineering firms, and operations personnel.
- Calculate and program protective relay set points, including for coordination purposes, for electromechanical and microprocessor relays and issue to operations personnel.
- Design automation and SCADA systems. Program relays, RTACs, and other devices to ensure system visibility and functionality
- Provide technical assistance with the evaluation and commissioning of new equipment for the interconnection within the CNP electric system.
- Provide support to field personnel in commissioning of facilities and the troubleshooting of existing equipment operations.
- Analyze outage and analog data to evaluate impact of certain equipment on a customer's service
- Analyze equipment operations and develop reports following system disturbances, with data obtained from microprocessor relays.
Education:
Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
Requires a minimum of two years of electric utility or power engineering experience that includes performing engineering calculations and design.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, Licenses/Certification, Abilities & Personal Characteristics (KSLAPs):
- Able to use software programs to provide project documentation, relay settings, event analysis, and equipment commissioning reports.
- Able to use personal computer software proficiently, such as those for word processing, spreadsheets, database managers, presentations, and electronic mail.
- Able to use mathematics, including trigonometry and calculus, to complete complex engineering design calculations and relate mathematical solutions to actual utility situations.
- Able to interpret, analyze and produce electrical models, drawings and technical documents.
- Able to apply knowledge of electrical theory and system operations to daily decisions.
- Able to make informed decisions, follow procedures and comply with policies based on the knowledge of the work and the services provided by CenterPoint Energy.
- Able to calculate system short circuit quantities using sequence networks.
- Able to prioritize and schedule tasks, pay attention to detail and demonstrate good organizational skills.
- Able to work and participate successfully in a team environment to accomplish assignments.
- Able to work well with both technical and non-technical personnel to gather and exchange information, resolve issues, plan activities and meet or exceed objectives.
- Able to manage time effectively, handle multiple tasks and priorities, operate under general direction, develop own work methods as required yet follow standard procedures and determine when management is to be consulted on unusual situations.
- Able to communicate effectively, in oral and written form, with co-workers, customers, vendors and the community.

- Able to use SAP and GIS for technical engineering applications.

- Able to provide and maintain a valid state driver's license and safe driving record.
- Able to comply with all company driver safety policy requirements.
- Able to complete assigned Emergency Operation Plan responsibility.

Physical Requirements:
- Able to demonstrate the visual acuity to view and inspect work and job sites/field locations.
- Able to exchange information with customers and company personnel.
- Able to climb, stand, walk, bend, kneel and squat to perform work.
- Able to demonstrate the manual dexterity required to operate a personal computer.
- Able to view computer terminal/screen, sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.
- Able to work a varied schedule that may require more than 40 hours per week to meet established deadlines and accomplish objectives.
- Able to take notes and compose written documents.
- Able to meet challenging deadlines and enjoy working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Able to exert less than ten pounds of force frequently and greater than ten pounds of force occasionally to list, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
- Able to travel to field locations for inspection, installation, investigation and occasionally to travel out of town overnight for meetings or conferences.
- Able to operate a copy machine, fax machine, calculator, telephone and other miscellaneous office equipment.
- Able to operate a motor vehicle.
Working Conditions:
- Able to perform work indoors in an office environment and outdoors at job site/field locations.
- Able to work in an environment with some exposure to; heat, dirt and/or greasy equipment, high noise levels, uneven and overgrown terrain, and enclosed spaces when inspecting work sites in field.
- Able to work a varied schedule that may require more than 40 hours per week to meet established deadlines and accomplish objectives.
- Able to meet challenging deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the company to aide in restoration efforts
