Job Summary:
CenterPoint Energy provides an essential public service which vitally affects the health, safety, comfort and general well-being of the people living in the area served by the Company. If any business unit activates an emergency operation plan, because of a threat to the continuation of service to our customers, employees may be called to fulfill an assignment. All employees, whether in their normal job or an emergency operation plan assignment, are essential to successful service restoration.
A successful candidate will be required to perform general labor and receive training under a Construction Supervisor. The labor is performed to assist in the construction and maintenance of high voltage electrical systems.
Essential Functions:
- Assist in the construction, maintenance, relocation, diagnosis of problems and repair of primary and/or secondary voltage electrical facilities in a safe, efficient, and focused manner.
- Construction crews will work single or multiple pole work on any applicable wire size and pole size for all distribution voltages and any other management assigned work within craft skill limits.
- Maintain prompt attendance and perform duties as required on a variety of shifts/schedule including the possibility of weekends and holidays. Must be able to respond 24/7 in emergency situations and work in all types of weather.
- Able to operate company vehicles safely and in compliance with applicable laws and company policies.
- Able to interpret blueprints, work orders, manuals, and other technical material related to the performance of the job.
- Must satisfactorily demonstrate ability to climb poles.
- Must be able to pass Company medical evaluation and must be able to distinguish colors, have depth perception, and be able to hear instructions or warnings from a person stationed on construction equipment.
- Must be able to endure strenuous physical exertion and have the dexterity to utilize hand and power tools.
- Must have the ability to lift, push, pull and lower loads manually and using blocks and rope.
- Must have the ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, and kneel for long periods of time.
- Must have the ability to reach and work overhead for long periods of time.
- Must have the ability to work from aerial devices.
- Must be able to perform job duties in variable conditions including but not limited to all types of weather and all times of the day or night.
- May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the company to aid in restoration efforts.
- Must demonstrate commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, the Company's Ethics and Compliance Code, and other Company policies and procedures, and take all required training courses.
- Construction crews will work single or multiple pole work on any applicable wire size and pole size for all distribution voltages and any other management assigned work within craft skill limits.
- Must possess a valid Commercial (Class A) driver’s license and/or be able to obtain a Texas Class A CDL prior to start
- Assume responsibility for the safety, and accurate time recording of assigned crew.
- Assume responsibility for maintaining and accounting for Company issued tools and equipment.

Education:
- High school diploma or GED
- Must have completed a state or federal apprenticeship program approved by the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) OR completion of a 3–4-year formal training program. (Copy of apprenticeship completion certificate with formal training transcripts required and/or JY level membership card through IBEW.)
Experience
- 4 years of Journeyman Line worker experience if an outside line apprenticeship was completed other than CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric (CEHE’s) program.
- Work experience in line construction, skilled trades, or maintenance of high voltage electrical systems, in an outside environment.
- Must be experienced in working voltage up to 35 kV URD and Overhead build types.
- Must be experienced in hot sticking.
Physical Requirements:
- Total body weight must not exceed 310lbs when fully dressed due to restricted equipment to perform tasks.
- Must satisfactorily demonstrate ability to climb poles within two weeks after selection.
- Must successfully complete all physical job tests, including any tests required to obtain a Commercial Driver's license.
- Must be able to pass Company medical evaluation and must be able to distinguish colors, have depth perception, and be able to hear instructions or warnings from a person stationed on construction equipment.
- Must be able to endure strenuous physical exertion and have the dexterity to utilize hand and power tools.
- Must have the ability to lift, push, pull and lower loads manually and using blocks and rope.
- Must have the ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, and kneel for long periods of time.
- Must have the ability to reach and work over head for long periods of time.
- Must have the ability to work from aerial devices up to 200 ft.
- Must have the ability to climb poles (wood, steel, concrete) and towers up to 325 ft.
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to perform job duties in variable conditions including but not limited to all types of weather and all times of the day or night.
- May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the company to aide in restoration efforts. This includes EOP (EP&R) efforts.
