Job Summary

A position in electric operations skilled work.  A successful candidate will be required to perform general labor and progress through the apprenticeship program for the Major Underground Distribution System.  The work will sometimes require working outside in harsh weather conditions along with extended hours.

Essential Functions

  • The apprenticeship consists of six, 6-month training steps
  • Must progress from one apprenticeship period to the next by successfully completing all requirements for the six (6) training steps. Successful completion of these steps will include written, oral, and demonstration skill tests. These skills will be learned through a combination of on the job and classroom training
  • Attend climbing school within the first 90 days of employment and demonstrate the ability to successfully climb and work on the pole
  • Assist in construction, maintenance, relocations, diagnose, and repair medium voltage and low voltage distribution cables and equipment
  • Work as directed to assist in the restoration of electrical service
  • Ability to work at extended heights of over 40 feet out of a bucket truck
  • Ability to utilize high school graduate level or equivalent mathematics
  • Ability to learn to operate computers, electronics and software relative to day-to-day activities of Major Underground Distribution
  • Ability to operate volt meters, amp meters and other similar devices
  • Maintain prompt attendance and perform duties on a variety of shifts and schedules.  Must be able to respond 24/7 for restoration activities
  • Interpret blueprints, schematics, work orders, manuals and other technical material related to performance of the job
  • Operate Department of Transportation rated company vehicles safely and in compliance with applicable laws and company policies
  • Ability to learn to use power tools and lift equipment
  • Ability to maintain hand tools and equipment

Education Description

  • Must have a High school education with knowledge of english grammar and mathematics required
  • Certification from a Technical College or electric distribution school with a climbing certification or a 2 year degree in Electrical Power with climbing certificate

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in electrical work, or related technical field is preferred.  Experience in electrical utility industry related work, commercial, military experience can offset the work requirements. 
  • Must have a current CDL
  • Must have a climbing certificate
  • Able to remain focused and follow procedures while working near energized primary and secondary voltage equipment with minimal supervision
  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment aptitude test
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Department of Transportation medical certification
  • Ability to respond to customers with respect and in a courteous manner
  • Able to consistently demonstrate commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, the Company’s Ethics and Compliance Code of Conduct, and other Company policies and procedures
  • Take all required training courses in a timely manner
  • Able to consistently demonstrate respect for all individuals as well as adhere to the Company’s values and business practices

 

Physical Requirements

  • Must pass a company medical evaluation
  • Able to work outdoors while exposed to heat, cold, rain and other variables
  • Able to lift, push, pull and lower loads manually and using blocks and ropes
  • Able to walk, stand,climb, bend, stoop and kneel for long periods
  • Ability to work in enclosed spaces

Working Conditions

  • Required to remain in the greater Houston area during emergency events
  • May be exposed to various poisonous plants, insects, animals such as rodents and snakes
  • Must maintain attendance and be available for extended shift activities until restoration events are completed
